Materramenta D.O. Biscoitos

The culture of these varieties is done in holes in the ground, protected from the sea and wind by stone walls that form the curraletas, resulting in a pure, intense, mineral wine with a unique flavor of the sea, with splashes of love. Produced in the parish of Biscoitos, by Luís Vasco Cunha.

The choice of the brand name was intended to honor the past, projecting the future. Materramenta was the first owner of the vineyard lands in the north of Terceira Island, having sold these lands to Pero Anes do Canto, the Provider of Troups and Ships of India in all the islands of the Archipelago.

You can find it in Portugal, Spain and Belgium!

The secret of its success lies in a perfect harmony between the experience accumulated since the 16th century and the most recent and demanding oenological knowledge. The black stones, formed from the magma, heat the vines and protect them from the lash of salted winds, from this sea that defines us, giving unique characteristics to this nectar. It is our intention that the tasting of this wine instantly takes us to the corraletas of the Biscoitos vineyards and to the hard work, completely manual, that is done there throughout the year.

Varieties: 60% Verdelho and 40% Arinto dos Açores (Terrantez da Terceira)

Production: 1,000 bottles

Alcohol: 11.5%

pH: 3.30

Total acidity: 7.6 Sugars: <1.5 g/l

Storage time: 8 years

Key points: Grapes harvested and selected manually, right in the vineyard, transported in small boxes, only the bunches being harvested in perfect conditions of maturation and health. Later selection of bunches on a sorting table. Total destemming. Fermentation in stainless steel vats (80%) and used French oak barrels (20%). In the barrel, malolactic fermentation took place. Aged for 8 months on fine lees in stainless steel and barrels with light battonage.

Tasting Notes: Very fresh and mineral nose with a distinct volcanic profile. Citrine and with discreet floral notes. Very direct mouth attack, with an assertive, persistent acidity and with saline and iodine notes.

Serving suggestion: Very versatile due to its vibrant acidity, it is ideal to accompany oysters, barnacles and other saline seafood. It is also the perfect companion for grilled fish, sushi or salads. It should be drunk between 10-12ºC.
